Lodging Review | Casa Mae, Lagos, Portugal
We’re not quite sure where we first saw Casa Mãe (pronounced “Ka-sa My”), which means “mother house”, but as soon as we saw these white walls, blue accents, and the artistic nudey pool chairs, we knew we had to stay here if we visited Lagos (pronounced “La-go-shh”). When we arrived, the front desk staff greeted us with fresh drinks and provided an orientation of the area via their own adorably designed maps of the city, while our bags were delivered to our Cabana rooms ($240/night in late May).
Located within the walled city center of Lagos, Casa Mãe’s property is well situated. You can walk to a week’s worth of divine restaurants and the beaches are only a 20 minute stroll from the front doors. However, our outdoor showers, private patios with hammocks, comfy beds, and luxurious baths tempted us to spend a day solely at the hotel before getting out to explore.
What: CASA MÃE
When: Spring to Fall
Where: Lagos, Portugal
Price: Starting at $99/night
Detailed touches, like a hand stamped, hand written note and fresh apricots in our room really made us feel like welcome guests. We also enjoyed the delightfully curated shop stocked with high quality Portuguese goods (our group traveled home with a pair of sunglasses, a ceramic vase, and a set of coasters) and the locally sourced hotel restaurant, Orta. Serving up organic fruits and vegetables grown in their on-site garden and specializing in grilled meats (the acorn fed pork stole the show), we ended up eating here for dinner twice because we enjoyed it so much. Their breakfasts were also a welcome treat for us San Francisco travelers - avocado toast, bacon, soft boiled egg, fresh juices, and artisan coffee.
In summary, Casa Mãe is hard to beat. 45/45 stars!
